Beautiful South of Tenerife – the best destination to stay

Tenerife is usually divided into two large areas: the north and the south. The north zone, although it has good climate almost all the year is rainy, it has a landscape characterized by a luxuriant and tropical vegetation, and its coast is wild with beaches of black sand.

The South for its part has a hotter climate and is much drier. In general, it is the most popular area among those who want the sun all over and the beach. If you are looking for good beaches with white or golden sand, and good weather guaranteed all year round the south is the best option.

The north offers a balance between good beaches, natural parks, culture, and a more local and select environment. For my taste has a lot more charm than the south, however for those who prevail over the whole beach theme may not be the best option.

The northern beaches are usually wilder and often have black sand of volcanic origin. The southern ones, many of them artificial with sand brought from the Sahara, are beaches of clear golden sand. That’s why the best idea probably will be to stay in the South of the island and take a private tour to Anaga and the North of Tenerife.

The most popular areas to stay in Tenerife are Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the island, and the Costa de Adeje, Playa de Las Americas, and Christians in the south. Besides these, which are the ones with the highest concentration of hotels, there are other quieter ones that should also be considered. That’s also the reason why in the south you have really wide range of activities, tours, boat trips and excursions in Tenerife.

The best destinations we can recommend if you wish to enjoy the warm climate all the year long are:

Costa Adeje

Costa Adeje is one of the most sought after beach areas and one of which has the best beaches. Undoubtedly it is one of the two or three best areas to stay in Tenerife. It comprises the entire stretch of coast from Callao Salvaje to Playa de Las Américas.

This part of the island with its luxury hotels is, next to Puerto de la Cruz, the most select and one of the most fashionable. The truth is that it has everything you could want for a perfect holiday.

On the one hand, it has excellent beaches of golden sands, with blue flags, and equipped with all kinds of services. On the other hand, there are a lot of activities like parks (some of the most famous are Aqualandia, Jungle Park or Siam Park), good golf courses, water activities, whale and dolphin tours, and a good number of boutiques, shopping centers, Restaurants, bars, casinos, and shows.

Despite having so much complementary offer it is still an area where you can relax and spend a quiet holiday. Its atmosphere has nothing to do with the Playa de Las Américas gap. For me, it is an ideal option since during the day you can enjoy its beaches and its good atmosphere, and at night if you want to go you just have to approach the neighboring Playa de Las Américas.

In Costa de Adeje the vast majority of hotels are luxury and superfluous. Here you will find few cheap accommodation options. In any case, it is one of the best areas to stay in Tenerife. If you can afford it, you’ll be right there.

Los Cristianos

Los Cristianos also located on the south coast just next to Playa de Las Americas is the second most tourist area of the southern part. Just like its neighbor has everything but it is quieter and has a much more local feel.

Before becoming such an important tourist destination it was just a fishing village. The town has developed around its small port that is still one of its attractions. It has two good beaches: Los Cristianos Beach, and Las Vistas beach, artificial white sand beach. Both have excellent infrastructures and services.

Just like Playa de Las Americas has everything. There are restaurants, bars, shops, the leisure of all kinds, and possibilities for water activities. It has a lot of life but its environment is less busy than the Americas.

Los Cristianos attracts all kinds of tourists. It attracts young people who spend the day at the beach and at night they go to the Americas, to couples and families who look for good beaches and have everything by hand and also to older people.

If you are looking for a complete destination that has all the Christians is a good place to stay in Tenerife. The accommodation offer is plentiful and there are hotels of all kinds. One of the most popular lodging options is the tourist apartment.

Las Americas

The Playa de Las Américas is the most touristy area of Tenerife. It is a long strip of the coast of several kilometers that unites the Coast of Adeje with the Christians. It has several beaches, mostly artificial created with imported sand, with all the necessary services and equipment.

Its beaches are excellent and have a blue flag. It is a really lively place and where it is difficult to get bored since this is where the largest leisure offer in the southern part is concentrated. It has a huge number of bars, restaurants, terraces, shops, and nightclubs.

Playa de Las Américas is the center of the nightlife of Tenerife for those who come on vacation. As such it attracts a lot of young people wanting to have fun. If you are looking for an area with sun and beach with lots of partying, this is the best area to stay in Tenerife.

It is not the ideal area for those looking for tranquility and disconnect. It is also not a place that stands out for its elegance or its class, for that better choose the Costa de Adeje or Puerto de la Cruz. I do not want to say that it is a neglected or ugly area, much less. Simply that it is a mass tourism area with what it entails.

This type of tourist areas does not go much unless I travel with groups of friends. However its beaches are good, it is a complete destination with plenty of leisure, and if you find something cheap or that suits your needs may be an option to consider.

In addition to young people, there are also many couples and family staying in this part. It is such a comfortable area and with so much offer for all the public that attracts all type of people. Their hotels also cover the entire spectrum. There are high-end hotels, medium options, and cheap accommodation.

Callao Salvaje

Callao Salvaje, also on the west coast, is located between the Port of Santiago and the Costa de Adeje. It is a basically residential town with some small hotels, and it has a small beach.

It has the same profile as Los Gigantes or the Port of Santiago. It is only recommended if you go on vacation in relax plan and do not mind giving up the services and leisure of other areas. In Callao Salvaje, you can find very affordable accommodation, some other bar, and restaurant. If you have a car it may be an interesting option to consider.
